President of CUPE Local 402: Laurie Larsen

I have been President of the local since 1998. I started with the City as a part time employee when I was just 16. I continued until I got married and when I had my first child I resigned from the City. I then resumed my career with the City in 1986 as a part time worker in Parks and Recreation. I started at the Newton Wave Arena, worked in the concession, office, and finally posted successfully to City Hall in the Planning Department.

I started as a Clerk 3, then Clerk 4, Plan checker 1, Plan checker 2, Plan checker 3/Building Inspector. I received my Building Technology Diploma from BCIT and my title of Registered Building Official in 1998. It took me 6 years at night school at BCIT and the writing of 10 exams to complete my studies.

I am married with four children, 3 of whom are adults and one who is 16. I also have one granddaughter. My family is a major part of my life. I could not have accomplished the things I have or be the person I am today without their support and understanding

The Local has changed throughout my terms in office and for the better I think. We have one of the most active executives and memberships. CUPE BC has complimented our Local many times on how progressive we are. That is thanks to the members of this Union

Thank you for your continued support over the years
In Solidarity
Laurie.
